Golden hour has just been so dang on point this wedding season. When you shoot weddings in England you get used to the fact that you don’t often get the same kind of magic light to work with that you see shared all over the worldwide photography industry. I’m actually really glad of that... shooting classic British grey and rainy days you learn to work with all kinds of light because you have to. You’re a problem solver and any small pocket of light feels like a gift. But that doesn’t mean I don’t do a happy dance when I get a lucky break and find myself shooting a scene soaked in light this beautiful 🌅 @k_braid85 looking beautiful at @longstowehall
I bloody love living in Derbyshire. There’s nothing finer than a sunny day in the peaks. Since I moved here when I was 14 I have fallen in love with this place over and over. p.s. The thing I get asked most at weddings is “so how do you know the couple?” People tend to assume that I’m a friend taking pictures. I used to worry when I kept hearing this that maybe I should be more businesslike, have an air of slickness... I realised a while ago I needed to take it as a compliment. People think I’m a friend and here’s why: * I will talk to your guests. For the most part I’m not going to be aloof and stand in the bushes and snipe them from afar. My camera will be immersed in your day so that’s how you feel when you look back at the photos and/or video. I jump in and bounce around like a pinball, and hopefully make friends along the way. * I will be myself with you. Heads up: I’m a nerd. * I fasten dresses, attach buttonholes, dry bouquets if time is short and other hands are shaky. * If you play You Can Call Me Al, I will dance. A lot. * I will roll around on the floor with any dogs that may be there. * I will be silly with you. * I will cheer when your guests cheer and laugh like a drain when the speeches are hilarious. * I will care. Every minute I am a part of your day, I will care that you are having the best day possible and that I am being the best/most useful/most helpful I can be for you. And then, after the day is done, I will never not be happy every time you pop up on my social media, be it a like, message or an encouraging comment. I will hope our paths will cross again so I get to find out what happened next... and if they do cross again, you’re getting hugged. Oh, and I will shoot the heck out of your wedding.
Here’s the thing, I’ve hardly been posting on Instagram lately. I used to use it quite a lot, back when it was pre-algorithm, phone snapshots and it was just a slice of life... a way to get to know each other better. I miss that. I’ve struggled to get into the new way of doing things... trying to think of captions... Using the right hashtags... posting at certain times of day... curating everything. I tried it and it just felt so forced. I felt like a less sophisticated Instagram bot. I’m trying to find a way to move with the times and catch up with where Instagram is now, but I also want to make sure everything I post has a purpose and that we get to know each other better in the process. I’ve chosen this photo to share from a recent wedding, it’s a favourite from my recent work... I love that evening light, all the little details around and the girl with the camera. I remember being that kid with a camera, running around and snapping the world around me and I still feel like that when I’m working on a regular basis. 💖💖💖
